1. What is depression? Learn to identify the symptoms

Depression is a complex mental health condition that affects millions of individuals globally. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities.

  • Appetite changes, weight fluctuations.

  • Sleep disturbances.

  • Fatigue or lack of energy.

  • Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering.

  • Overwhelming feelings of guilt or worthlessness.

  • Suicidal thoughts.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a severe form of depression characterized by a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks, involving mood changes, cognitive shifts, and physical symptoms. It is the second leading cause of chronic disease burden, linked to increased risks of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and suicide.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report that more than 7% of adults experience major depression at some point during the year, including an estimated 2.8% of adults with bipolar disorder and approximately 1% with schizophrenia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. It is estimated that more than 280 million people live with depression worldwide. WHO reported that about 5% of the world's adult population suffers from depression.

2. What is Neurocann?

Neurocann is a specialized formulation combining broad-spectrum Cannabidiol (CBD) oil derived from the cannabis plant, and prebiotics. The active ingredients include cannabinoids such as Cannabigerol (CBG), Cannabichromene (CBC), terpenes, and flavonoids. This combination of compounds improves symptoms such as feelings of sadness, irritability and anger, fatigue and lack of energy, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, guilt, altered appetite, thoughts of death or suicide, difficulty falling asleep and concentration. These symptoms are commonly associated with a diagnosis of depression.

3. Why Neurocann?

Neurocann is the best alternative for treating depressive and mood disorders while enhancing overall health and well-being, all without the side effects commonly associated with traditional medications. By targeting the Microbiota-Gut-Brain (MGB) axis, it provides a comprehensive approach to managing depression and mood imbalances. Neurocann addresses both neuroinflammation and gut inflammation, promoting homeostasis, enhancing neurotransmitter production, and engaging multiple molecular targets within the endocannabinoid system to optimize mental health.

Our Broad Spectrum CBD oil contains a rich blend of cannabinoids, including cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabichromene (CBC), along with beneficial terpenes and flavonoids, all without the psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant, THC. This combination helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress linked to depressive disorders, contributing to overall mental well-being.

The mechanisms of action of cannabinoids (CBD) provide similar effects to conventional antidepressants and 5-HT1A serotonin receptor agonists. A receptor is a protein or similar structure on a cell that binds to a specific molecule (such as a neurotransmitter, hormone or drug) and triggers a biological response in the cell. Such binding can be agonistic (activates that receptor to produce a biological response) or antagonistic (blocks or inhibits the action of other ligands (such as neurotransmitters or hormones) that would normally activate that receptor).

Thus, CBD at the nervous system level acts as an agonist at the human 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, demonstrating its relationship in three approaches. First, CBD increases the binding of [35S] GTPγS in this G protein-coupled receptor system, as does the known agonist, serotonin. Second, in this G-protein-coupled receptor system, which is negatively coupled to cAMP production, both CBD and 5-HT reduce cAMP concentration to similar levels of apparent receptor occupancy. Third, invagination of serotonin transporter vesicles is induced. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the regulation of mood, sleep, appetite and many other physiological functions.

Broad-spectrum CBD acts on the dopaminergic system as a partial agonist at the dopamine D2 receptor at the brain level, which means it interacts directly with the brain's reward and satisfaction system. Additionally, it promotes the viability of adult neuronal progenitor cells and inhibits their differentiation into astroglia, which makes it a potential candidate for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antidepressant properties contributing to the management of mood disorders.

In addition to CBD, CBG is a powerful antioxidant with neuroprotective properties. It has been shown to reduce colonic inflammation, which is beneficial for the gut microbiota, and counteract oxidative stress, potentially offering protection against neurodegeneration and modulating symptoms of mood disorders.CBC, another key compound in Neurocann, provides anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antidepressant properties that further contribute to its role in mood disorder management.

Action on the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain axis is a complex bidirectional network that connects the central nervous system with the digestive system through the gut (microbiota), the immune system and the endocrine system. This connection is key in the regulation of mood, behavior and cognitive function. The gut microbiota, composed of billions of microorganisms, influences the brain through the production of metabolites, modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA as well as regulation of systemic inflammation.

To maintain an optimal gut microbiota it is necessary to include prebiotics. Prebiotics are the substrate of healthy gut bacteria, favoring their growth and bringing positive effects on the intestinal system since recent studies have shown that certain prebiotics such as inulin, galactooligosaccharides, lactulose and plant polysaccharides can favorably modify the composition of the intestinal microbiota.

Different studies have shown that an improvement in the microbiota has an impact on decreasing intestinal inflammation, which could benefit brain health. The positive effects on the Microbiota-Gut-Brain axis are reflected in the reversal of gut disorders associated with depression, helping to restore gut microbial balance, modulating the enteric nervous system and reducing chronic inflammation, which is linked to neuropsychiatric conditions.

Conventional medications used to treat psychiatric disorders like depression, including lorazepam, paroxetine, and fluoxetine, are often associated with a range of adverse effects that require careful monitoring. Lorazepam, a benzodiazepine-class anxiolytic, can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and, with prolonged use, an increased risk of dependence and cognitive impairment, particularly in patients with dementia. It has also been linked to a higher incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as paroxetine and fluoxetine, may lead to side effects like nausea, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and reduced spermatogenesis, which can result in male infertility. Additionally, prolonged use of these drugs in elderly patients may exacerbate Parkinson’s symptoms by inducing rigidity and tremors, with some studies suggesting they may accelerate cognitive decline in dementia cases. Moreover, most of these conventional antidepressants do not positively impact the gut microbiota, which recent research has identified as a critical target in managing neuropsychiatric disorders.

On the other hand, Neurocann offers a safe and innovative alternative for managing depression and mood disorders, without the adverse effects typically associated with traditional medications. Neurocann works by modulating the Microbiota-Gut-Brain axis to restore the body's natural balance. By improving gut health and regulating key neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, Neurocann helps reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, leading to improved mood regulation and cognitive function. This makes Neurocann a safer, more natural option for those seeking alternatives to conventional psychiatric treatments.
