1. What is Cancer?

Cancer is a disease in which certain cells in the body grow uncontrollably, gaining the ability to invade and destroy healthy tissue. It often spreads to other body parts, affecting organs beyond the initial site.

The signs and symptoms of cancer vary depending on the affected area, but some general, non-specific symptoms include:

  • Fatigue

  • A lump or thickened area under the skin

  • Significant weight changes

  • Skin lesions or changes in color

  • Changes in bowel or urinary habits

  • Persistent cough or shortness of breath

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Hoarseness

  • Chronic indigestion or discomfort after eating

  • Unexplained persistent muscle or joint pain

  • Bleeding or bruising with no apparent cause

Cancer is caused by changes, or mutations, in the DNA within cells. These mutations can be inherited or, more commonly, acquired over a person’s lifetime due to factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, radiation exposure, viral infections, carcinogenic chemicals, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and a sedentary lifestyle.

In the United States, cancer affects one in three people and is the second leading cause of death worldwide. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the most common cancers projected for 2024, in descending order, are breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, colon and rectal cancer, melanoma, bladder cancer, kidney and renal pelvis cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, endometrial cancer, pancreatic cancer, leukemia, thyroid cancer, and liver cancer.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022, there were approximately 20 million new cancer diagnoses worldwide, and about 9.7 million people died from the disease that year. This means nearly 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime, and around 1 in 9 men and 1 in 12 women will die from it.

2. What is VitaCancer?

Vitacancer is a specialized formulation that combines the therapeutic properties of the cannabis plant in one product, utilizing broad-spectrum Cannabidiol (CBD) oil. This formulation includes active cannabinoids such as Cannabigerol (CBG) and Cannabichromene (CBC), as well as terpenes and flavonoids, while excluding the psychoactive compound THC. These compounds synergistically boost the immune system by reducing cellular inflammation, inhibiting tumor growth, and providing anti-metastatic effects.

Furthermore, Vitacancer contains genistein and artemisinin. Genistein, a powerful antioxidant, helps neutralize free radicals and enhance the immune response, while also contributing to anti-inflammatory effects. Artemisinin has been shown to induce oxidative stress in cancer cells, leading to their apoptosis (cell death) and helping to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. Together, these ingredients support the body’s natural defenses, offering a comprehensive approach to immune modulation and cancer symptom management.

In addition to its anti-cancer properties, Vitacancer helps alleviate a wide range of symptoms associated with disease progression and the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These symptoms include fatigue, hair loss (alopecia), bruising, digestive hemorrhages, infections, anemia, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, constipation, and diarrhea. The formula also addresses oral conditions like thrush and dysphagia, muscle pain and stiffness, brittle nails, and changes in urination and bowel habits. Furthermore, it can aid in mitigating weight loss, difficulty concentrating, mood swings, and alterations in sexual desire and function.

3. Why VitaCancer?

Vitacancer is an excellent option for enhancing the immune system and shielding it from oxidative stress and harmful exposure to toxins, microorganisms, radiation, and other disease triggers. Through its anti-inflammatory effect, it counteracts the accelerated and uncontrolled production of cells that predispose to cancer development through a common anti-proliferative mechanism of CBD by regulating pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins and mediators, which induces cell apoptosis of cells and tumors (Misri et al., 2022). CBD reduces angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) by down-regulating the signaling of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) and tumor suppressor protein VHL (Jo et al., 2021). This inhibition of angiogenesis not only restricts the blood supply that tumors need to grow but also decreases the likelihood of metastasis, or the spread of cancer to distant parts of the body.

Vitacancer provides analgesic (pain-relieving) effects and improves mood. CBD functions similarly to traditional antidepressants by acting on serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT1A receptor, which regulates mood, sleep, appetite, and other physiological processes. Receptors are proteins that bind to specific molecules like neurotransmitters, hormones, or drugs, triggering biological responses. A receptor can act as an agonist, activating a response, or as an antagonist, inhibiting the action of other molecules that usually activate it. Serotonin is a crucial neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, sleep, and overall well-being.

CBD acts positively on those sleep-wake disturbances as well as other secondary events commonly associated with conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia and inappetence.

Anorexia and Inappetence: CBD has shown potential in influencing appetite by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in regulating appetite, metabolism, and energy balance. CBD works indirectly, potentially affecting the release of hormones related to hunger, such as leptin and ghrelin.

Anxiety and Stress Reduction: CBD helps alleviate anxiety and stress in cancer patients by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a key role in regulating mood, stress response, and emotional well-being. Research has shown that CBD acts on serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT1A receptor, which is responsible for regulating mood, anxiety, and stress. By enhancing serotonin signaling, CBD can produce anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects similar to those of traditional antidepressants, offering relief from the emotional distress often experienced by cancer patients.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties: CBD's anti-inflammatory properties are primarily due to its ability to modulate the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a crucial role in regulating immune responses and inflammation. By activating CB2 receptors, which are primarily located in immune cells, CBD helps reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and decreases the overall inflammatory response. This is particularly important for cancer patients, as chronic inflammation can exacerbate pain and lead to further complications in their condition.

In addition to reducing inflammation, CBD offers significant pain relief by interacting with various pain pathways in the body. CBD influences TRPV1 receptors, which are involved in the sensation of pain and temperature regulation. By desensitizing these receptors, CBD can help mitigate pain signals. Furthermore, CBD enhances the body's natural endocannabinoids, such as anandamide, which are known to have pain-relieving properties. By preventing the breakdown of these endocannabinoids, CBD helps prolong their effects, offering longer-lasting pain relief.

Cell apoptosis: CBD also exerts suppressive effects on tumor growth and cell pleomorphism by decreasing gene expression of VEGF, a key mediator of angiogenesis in cancer, and serum levels of the proinflammatory cytokines, IL-6 and IL-8 (Honarmand et al., 2019). CBD inhibition of VEGF and EGFR could help explain its protective effect against tumor invasiveness, migration and metastasis.  In recent years, the potential synergistic effects of CBD and chemotherapeutic drugs against (Honarmand et al., 2019) have also been evaluated. Enhancing the anticancer efficacy of CBD may help to reduce the required dose of these drugs in chemotherapy, which, in turn, may alleviate their adverse effects.

On the other hand, artemisinin is a natural compound extracted from the plant Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood), known for its use in the treatment of malaria. In recent years, there has been growing interest in investigating its potential against cancer. Although artemisinin is not a conventional cancer treatment, studies suggest several mechanisms by which it may have anticancer effects. Within the mechanisms of action, we have:

  1. Generation of Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress: Artemisinin and its derivatives can generate oxygen free radicals in the presence of iron. These free radicals can induce oxidative stress in cancer cells, which can lead to apoptosis (programmed cell death) and inhibition of tumor growth. Oxidative Stress refers to an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants. ROS, which include free radicals like superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, can damage cells, proteins, and DNA when they accumulate in excess. This imbalance can lead to cellular dysfunction and is associated with various diseases and aging processes.

  2. Inhibition of Angiogenesis: Artemisinin can inhibit the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) necessary for tumor growth and spread. This is due to its ability to affect growth factors and signals involved in the formation of blood vessels in tumors.

  3. Modulation of Cell Signaling Pathways: Artemisinin can influence several cell signaling pathways related to cell growth and proliferation, such as the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt pathways. By modifying these pathways, artemisinin can alter cancer cell proliferation and survival.

  4. Induction of Apoptosis: Artemisinin can promote apoptosis in cancer cells by activating several proteins and enzymes involved in programmed cell death. This may include activation of caspases and upregulation of anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic proteins.

  5. Cell Cycle Interference: Artemisinin may affect the cell cycle, preventing cancer cells from progressing through the cell cycle phases necessary for proliferation. This may contribute to the arrest of tumor growth.

Finally, genistein acts in the body through several key mechanisms, among them we can mention:

Estrogen Receptor Modulation: Genistein is a phytoestrogen, which means that it can bind to estrogen receptors on cells. Depending on the context, it can act as an agonist (mimicking the effects of estrogen) or as an antagonist (blocking the effects of estrogen). This action is relevant in hormone-sensitive tissues, such as bone and the cardiovascular system.

Antioxidant Properties: Genistein has antioxidant capacity, which means it can neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. This helps protect cells from oxidative damage, which is associated with aging and various chronic diseases.

Aromatase Inhibition: Genistein can inhibit aromatase, an enzyme that converts androgens to estrogens. This action is particularly relevant in conditions related to elevated estrogen levels, such as certain hormone-dependent cancers.

Modulation of Gene Expression: Genistein may affect the expression of genes related to important biological processes such as inflammation, cell growth and metabolism. This may influence a variety of health conditions, including cancers and metabolic diseases.

Anti-inflammatory Effects: Genistein may reduce inflammation by interfering with inflammatory pathways and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This contributes to its potential to protect against inflammatory and chronic diseases
